WELCOME NEW STAFF & SCHOLARS


Ian Haney Lopez photo
Ian Haney López, Director of New Racial Politics Project
Author and Berkeley Law professor Ian Haney López will be joining the Haas Institute as director of the Institute's new Racial Politics project, which will build in part from his book Dog Whistle Politics: How Coded Racial Appeals Have Reinvented Racism and Wrecked the Middle Class, an analysis of how politicians have used racial pandering to garner votes while passing policies that overwhelmingly favor the most wealthy. Haney López says the project will expose how coded racism pervades electoral politics and is also used to incite popular hostility toward liberal governance and to attack the role of government itself. Richard Rothstein
Richard Rothstein, Senior Fellow
Richard Rothstein is joining the Haas Institute as a Senior Fellow. Richard is a research associate at the Economic Policy Institute, where he works on policy issues regarding education and race. He currently researches and writes about the history of government’s role in the creation of residential segregation. This year at that Haas Institute, Richard will be completing a book on this topic. Richard was formerly a senior fellow at the Chief Justice Earl Warren Institute on Law and Social Policy at Berkeley’s law school, until that institute closed at the end of 2015.
Victor Pineda
Dr. Victor Pineda, Senior Research Fellow
Dr. Victor Pineda will be a new Senior Research Fellow and visiting scholar at the Haas Institute. Victor was most recently appointed by President Obama to the US Access Board. Victor will work in expanding on the scholarship and research from the Haas Institute Disability Studies Cluster as well as in elevating our work more globally. Read more about Victor's work here. 

Sara Grossman
Sara Grossman, Communications and Media Specialist
Sara Grossman is a new part-time Communications and Media Specialist at the Haas Institute. Sara graduated from UC Berkeley in 2015 with a degree in Political Economy and a concentration in urbanization. Sara has previously written for CNN, the Chronicle of Higher Education, and a number of other news outlets. While at Cal, Sara served as the executive news editor for The Daily Californian, UC Berkeley's independent student newspaper, and was an active member of Delta Phi Epsilon, the co-ed foreign service fraternity. Sara served as a Haas Institute intern during her senior year. 

Faculty Cluster Highlights

Julian ChowHaas Institute Diversity and Health Disparities research cluster member Julian Chow was recently named a 2016 Fellow by the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR). According to the announcement, "the prestigious honor is bestowed to SSWR members 'who have served with distinction to advance the mission of the Society—to advance, disseminate, and translate research that addresses issues of social work practice and policy and promotes a diverse, equitable and just society.'" Congratulations Julian!

Racing into the Future

Director john powell penned a reflection on the year 2015 about our complicated relationship with and understanding of race, as well as how we "do" race will be crucial in the year ahead as well as many more to come. Read the full post in the Huffington Post here.
IN THE MEDIA
In December, Director john a. powell spoke at The Kauffman Foundation in Kansas City, Missouri about the divisiveness that this country faces and the "fear of the other" that plays into these divisions. Using examples of presidential candidates, powell elucidated how people separate themselves from one another in order to achieve political power or popularity. While in Kansas, powell also led workshops with other Kansas City area groups, including area foundations and the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City. Read the write-up on john's visit in this Kansas City Star article.
Hossein Ayazi
Research Assistant Hossein Ayazi gave a lengthy interview on WORT 89.9 FM to discuss the recent Haas Institute Farm Bill report. Hossein explained how certain policies within the largest agricultural piece of legislation, a $956 billion omnibus bill, perpetuate racial and socioeconomic disparities. Hossein also addressed the power exercised by corporations in the US food system and agricultural policy, advocating for a food sovereignty movement that will benefit all. Practicing law for social change

In a recently released book The Lawyer as a Leader about lawyers working for leadership and advocacy in social justice, Director john a. powell is featured as one of the transformative leaders effecting change. The book was authored by Dr. Artika Tyer.
