Fear, Grievance, and the Other How Authoritarian Populist Politics Thrive in Contemporary Democracies — Key concepts to understand politics beyond the left-right paradigm |
In a fresh analysis we published this week, Miriam Juan-Torres González, who is Head of Research at OBI's Democracy & Belonging Forum, illustrates key concepts that help us understand the rise, strategies, and tactics of exclusionary, nativist, and populist movements today. The paper advances the framework of authoritarian populism as an analytical tool that informs practical efforts to combat these movements, address structural marginality, and advance democracies rooted in belonging.

Gondolas as an Urban Transportation and Climate Solution? 🤔
In a thought-provoking guest piece for NextCity, Eli Moore, who is director of OBI's Community Power and Policy Partnerships Program, advocates for the adoption of gondolas (aerial cable cars) in the United States as a form of public transit. In the United States, people may associate gondolas as a feature you would find at a ski resort to get you to the top of the slopes. But in many countries, Eli notes, they are used to enhance public transit. Some of their benefits are speed, reliability, and that they can run entirely on renewable energy.
