It already seems both like a long time ago and just yesterday that thousands of us came together in Oakland to celebrate each other and lean more deeply into making a world where all belong and where no one is othered.
I know this is an ambitious effort, and some would even say impossible. If I did not know many of you, I might agree. We know that many things support this critical work including bridging, targeted universalism, intention, and the new story about who we are becoming.
Every day there are new causes for concern and despair. But there are also emerging possibilities—and joys, both big and small—to be grateful for. I do not subscribe to a superpower, but if I did, it would be you.
Right now, I would say it is important to take care of yourself, each other, the earth, and world around us. I appreciate the work you are doing and how you are being.
Let’s make time to appreciate and support each other. We are part of a movement, so let’s keep moving. We are also part of a family, so let’s keep practicing care and love.
Thank you for helping to co-create a world of belonging without othering. It is more than just a hashtag, it’s a dream. With deep appreciation and love, john a. powell Director, Othering & Belonging Institute |

Explore the Full Conference Experience
Our conference website provides a comprehensive overview, including speaker bios, session details, a media archive with videos and podcasts, a photo gallery, and more. Below we're including just a handful of samples of what you can find on our conference page. But first we wanted to share just a couple testimonials from attendees who filled out our post-conference survey:
- “I walked away feeling more confident in my ability to have hard conversations and to see the humanity in everyone I talk to. LOVE was a message I walked away with.”
-
“My main take-away, as someone positioned in academia, is to move from my head to my heart and look for ways to bring my action to my work and to lift others up.”
- “The use of art was really inspirational. The space for breathing and decolonizing the academic presentation overall was great.”

"This was the most powerful introduction [to disability justice] I could have asked for. The call for anyone who wore glasses to understand that they had accessibility for a disability seemed to be a foundation setting for many of us."
