VIDEO CLIP: The Space Between Us. The Space Between Us - Review
As a big fan of Sarah Crowell, I went to Dance Mission Theatre to experience "Tell," the latest piece that she co-directed with Keith Hennessy in collaboration with Larry Arrington, Samara Atkins, Amber Julian, Sheila Russel, Ansley Tharp, and Shuanna Vella. I list all artists by name because they each contributed in beautiful ways individually and to the whole. I was familiar with the powerful film The Space Between Us, directed by Gabriel Diamond, which was the catalyst for Sarah and Keith's work on Tell. I have used the short film in several ways to illustrate a creative and profound approach to bridging.
The performance was an invitation to witness the process they used towards racial healing; they let the audience see and experience what the journey had been for the group. They showed how they self-organized within groups and what individual and collective contributions looked like through dance. They also creatively shared the story of their identified similarities and differences. It was a careful performance that put in a lot of work to ensure that each dancer was a part of the whole and that the audience was also made a part of it. My favorite moment (ok, well, there were two) was when Sheila Russel danced solo, demonstrating the intimate portrayal of grief within the human experience. My second favorite was the closing dance party :).
