New database offers granular look at climate displacement |
Currently, over 70 percent of people displaced worldwide are from the most climate-vulnerable countries–largely from across the Global South. |
The interactive Climate Refugees Database we launched today illustrates how and why this is the case while also providing the information needed to develop recommendations and strategies in service of the “Right to Stay.” Bridging efforts to advance protections for people displaced by the climate crisis with efforts to build climate resilience, this interactive database joins global data on climate displacement, climate event exposure and vulnerability, emissions goals and compliance, governance and capacity building for climate resilience and mitigation, and climate finance needs and barriers.
Check out the database here, and don't forget to tune in to our livestream happening TODAY at 11am PT / 2pm ET to learn more about this project from our Global Justice team, which developed it.

New course offer at OBI University
We've just opened our second free, online course on bridging: Levels of Bridging, accessible at OBI University, our new initiative which brings to you on-demand, virtual classes designed for people committed to building a more vibrant, equitable world. These lessons encourage thinking critically about where we bridge, how power operates, and what's at stake when we don't bridge. Programs are designed to be accessible and flexible, so you can learn at your own pace and fit education into your busy life. As a bonus, you'll receive a certificate when you complete these courses — perfect for professional development.

Are you already a student at OBIU? Please consider inviting your friends, family, and colleagues to join. |
How do we catch people where they fall? How do we respond to this crisis in a way that doesn’t reinforce its architecture? What kind of politics is being summoned at this time?
Join OBI’s Democracy & Belonging Forum on Thursday, November 16, 2023 (8:00 AM - 9:15 AM PT / 11:00 AM - 12:15 PM ET / 5:00 PM - 6:15 PM CET) for the next conversation in our ongoing series The Edges in the Middle, where OBI Global Senior Fellow Bayo Akomolafe will speak with Professor Sa’ed Atshan and OBI’s Cecilie Surasky on holding each other’s pain even as lines are increasingly drawn around whose lives are grievable and whose are not.

One of the hidden aspects of the Black Panther Party was its contributions to the nascent disability rights movement in the 1970s. In 1977, the Party famously supported a 26-day occupation of a federal building in San Francisco during the nationwide “504 Movement” demanding the passage of legislation to outlaw ability-based discrimination in federally-financed programs. Join us on Wednesday, November 29 at 4:30pm for an in-person conversation at UC Berkeley around the intersectionalities of Disability and Blackness.
