Our latest reading packs reveal the scope of Islamophobia in Europe and Asia-Pacific |
|
|
These reading resource packs, developed by our Global Justice Program, provide an overview of the various expressions of Islamophobia in different countries in those regions. While hate crimes and discrimination against Muslims are an obvious form of Islamophobia, these resource packs crucially examine the official, policy-level areas in countries that institutionalize othering in more subtle ways. |

|
The release of these two publications for Europe and the Asia-Pacific region are our second and third reading packs on the topic, coming five years after our first one on Islamophobia in the United States.
Find all of these publications, and other related work, on our Islamophobia site. |
And in case you missed it, last Friday we hosted a 90-minute virtual launch event to mark the publication of these two resource packs featuring the authors. The panelists provided an overview of their research, trends they've observed in different countries based on the literature, what Islamophobia looks like in terms of official policy and many other aspects of this issue. Visit this page for the recording and transcript of the event.

Single-Family Zoning in the Fresno Region
Earlier this month we published the latest installment of our California Zoning Atlas, which is a project to map the zoning for every region of the state and study the relationship between zoning and the life outcomes of residents. The results of this latest study examining Fresno County were a departure from past studies in which we had observed that single-family zoning was overwhelming in the housing landscapes of towns and cities across California. In this report, we found the proportion of single-family zoning to be significantly lower, and multi-family housing higher, than in other regions. Learn more about this report here, and see our related zoning reports here.

Mainstreaming right-wing rhetoric on migration and climate
You're not going to want to miss the latest essay from Míriam Juan-Torres González, head of research at OBI's Democracy & Belonging Forum, in which she examines how anti-immigrant (and other) tropes used by the far-right have become popularized in Europe, even among progressives. She opens the essay with a personal story about conducting a focus group with young, progressive Spaniards who name "unaccompanied minors" -- a veiled term for migrant youth linked to street crime -- as among the problems they worry about, a narrative pushed by the right. Read about how this phenomenon is unfolding, and use the form on the bottom of that page to receive these essays directly to your inbox by subscribing to the Democracy and Belonging Forum's mailing list.

Have you registered yet for the Othering & Belonging Conference in Berlin?!
Our Othering & Belonging Conference in Berlin is quickly approaching! We hope you'll be able to join us on October 26-27 at what will be our first conference outside of the United States to examine how othering and belonging frameworks can enhance global strategies for countering the far-right and bolstering democracy. We’ll center bridging as a response to fracturing and division, and elevate the need for more complex and nuanced stories that reflect our true multi-layered identities.
