Unpacking the Supreme Court's ruling on Affirmative Action |
Join us for an online discussion on what the SCOTUS decision would mean for the future of our universities, and beyond. |
|
|
The US Supreme Court this week is expected (but guaranteed) to issue a ruling that would further curtail considerations of race in university admissions at both public and private colleges. If that happens, the decision would reverse decades of legal precedent and create new challenges in the efforts to diversify campus student bodies. But what specifically would the ruling outlaw? What would still be allowed? What changes could we expect to see in light of the decision? And what mechanisms would be left for universities to meet diversity goals?
|
Join us soon (The date and time are TBD, pending the ruling) to hear from legal experts about the implications of this decision on university student bodies, its wider social significance, and what can be done to help universities and other institutions better reflect the diversity of our country.
Speakers This event is organized by the Othering & Belonging Institute, and co-sponsored by Berkeley Law. It will include live captioning.

Check out our new Bridging-to-Belonging Curriculum
We have just launched this 90-minute curriculum workshop which offers modules on the topics of Othering, Breaking, Bridging and Belonging. The workshop allows for an interactive discussion using dynamic real world examples of bridging. There are four different written cases with accompanying resources which allow facilitators to choose a case that is most relevant to their audience. This is designed for folks who have already been introduced to the concepts but can use a refresher through examples. Learn more about this curriculum here.

ICYMI: Cities Against Racism
In this June 14 event organized as part of our (Un)Common Threads conversation series, we explored the strengths and challenges of city governments pursuing anti-racist policies with civic leaders from Europe and the US. They discussed opportunities in learning from each other internationally, and the trends, patterns, and differences from the perspective of European and U.S. localities. Click here for a video recording and transcript of the event.

Event: Who has Power? Where is Power?
Join the Democracy & Belonging Forum on Thursday, July 6, 2023 (8:00 AM - 9:30 AM PT / 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM ET / 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM CET) for the next event in the ongoing series The Edges in the Middle, where OBI Global Senior Fellow Bayo Akomolafe will speak with Minna Salami and Professor Madhulika Banerjee about the changing body of democracy, the presumption of universality often entangled with conversations about democracy, the moral and architectural limitations of the concept, the historical practices of commoning that have existed alongside the emergence of democracy as a technology of power, and what we might do together to instigate new forms of being-together that are responsive to the times and the intelligence lost when politics are animated exclusively by people.
