We're excited to release the latest report in our body of work on forced migration.

Despite the growing consensus among climate scientists and international governing bodies that forced migration is an effect of climate change, the term “climate refugees” is not part of international law. As a result, protections for climate-induced displaced persons forced to cross international borders are limited, piecemeal, and not legally binding.

This latest report produced by our Global Justice program examines how civil society, policymakers, and other stakeholders across the globe can advocate for guaranteed protections for climate-induced displaced persons within international refugee law in ways that support and are supported by the fights for climate reparations and just transitions.

To mark the launch of the report we organized an online panel of experts from around the world who shared ideas to strengthen and bridge movements for climate refugee protections, climate reparations, and just transitions. Speakers included Amali Tower, Hamza Hamouchene, Mizan Khan, Ineza Umuhoza Grace, and Hossein Ayazi. Watch this event in the video above, or on our website here.

Join us in Berlin for our next O&B Conference!

As we announced last week, registration is now open for our next Othering & Belonging Conference, taking place in Berlin on October 26-27, 2023! We hope you'll join us at what will be our first conference outside of the United States to examine how othering and belonging frameworks can enhance global strategies for countering the far-right and bolstering democracy. We’ll center bridging as a response to fracturing and division, and elevate the need for more complex and nuanced stories that reflect our true multi-layered identities.
