California is weighing three bills to support social housing. Here's a look at what changes they could bring about. |

While there is no single definition of social housing, it is generally described as publicly financed, affordable housing that is developed and owned by either government or a mission-driven nonprofit. Our new analysis compares three bills being considered by state lawmakers that take aim at the failure of our current housing system to provide affordable housing, and explicitly seek to address the dysfunction of the private market and the limitations of tax credit-funded affordable housing programs. In case you missed our panels on affirmative action, we have recordings for you
In the last week and a half we hosted two fantastic panels discussing the Supreme Court's ruling to ban affirmative action in university admissions. First, we assembled a panel of legal experts, which included Berkeley Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky and Georgetown Law Professor Sheryll Cashin, who provided insight into the implications of the ruling as it pertains to law. And then yesterday we premiered a more upbeat conversation among an energetic panel of thinkers and organizers from the Solidarity Council on Racial Equity who talked about how solidarity makes a difference in the lives of people impacted by this decision. They included the journalist Maria Hinojosa and UCLA Labor Professor Kent Wong. OBI Director john a. powell spoke on both panels, which you can find, along with many other resources on affirmative action, on our website here.

Here's what zoning looks like in the Santa Cruz/Monterey region
We've just completed the fifth installment of our California Zoning Atlas, which is a project to map the zoning for region of the state and study the relationship between zoning and the life outcomes of residents. This fifth report in the series looks at the three-county Monterey region, which includes Santa Cruz, and finds that 93 percent of the land is reserved for single-family homes. Because the population here is relatively small, this brief provides only a summary of the findings and identifies just two cities for reform. See the Monterey region study here.

Video: Democracy and its Equisite Others
On July 6 our Democracy & Belonging Forum hosted its latest installment of The Edges in the Middle series where OBI Global Senior Fellow Bayo Akomolafe spoke with Minna Salami and Professor Madhulika Banerjee about the changing body of democracy, the presumption of universality often entangled with conversations about democracy, the moral and architectural limitations of the concept, the historical practices of commoning that have existed alongside the emergence of democracy as a technology of power, and what we might do together to instigate new forms of being-together that are responsive to the times and the intelligence lost when politics are animated exclusively by people.
