May 12, 2021 Decoding Zoning: Regulation and Reform in California
Earlier this week we released a new brief that breaks down in a clear and concise format the seemingly complex process for zoning reform under California law. The guide describes the statutory basis and process of amending zoning law in California, offers a framework for understanding the phases of reform, and provides examples from California and beyond. It also includes a spreadsheet where we track efforts around the country to reform zoning, which will be continuously updated. This report is part of our ongoing research on racial residential segregation. Click to access Decoding Zoning: Regulation and Reform in California.

Meet our inaugural Creative Fellow We recently welcomed our inaugural Toward Belonging Creative Fellow, Alexander Nezam, an experimental filmmaker who aims to use the power of filmmaking and participatory design to build belonging. As Toward Belonging's 2021 Creative Fellow, Nezam will facilitate a long-form “participatory filmic poem” created by immigrant communities in Verona, Italy. The final film will feature disparate visual pieces woven together, where each subject demonstrates what othering or belonging looks like to them, including visual expressions of belonging. Read more about Nezam's work and the creative fellowship program here.
