June 23, 2021 Several thousand of you tuned in to yesterday's live event, "The Roots of Structural Racism: Residential Segregation in the US," where we presented our national segregation project and spoke with housing researchers and legal experts from around the country about the need to work towards integration. It was clear from the public and media response to our project that there's enormous interest in this work and desire for change. At the bottom of this email we've included a long list of news reports covering this project, with more to come.
Many of you who were unable to attend yesterday's event asked us if there would be a recording. Here it is, along with a transcript.
You can jump to some highlights from the event using the following links:
And be sure to bookmark our project's landing page, which includes the report, and links to the interactive map, appendix, segregation tables, city profiles, local histories, and other components grouped together in the navigation menu on the right-hand side of the page.
Important note regarding our interactive web map Our team has built what we believe is the most powerful interactive mapping tool of segregation in the United States ever created. It shows you segregation levels of every region, city, and neighborhood across the country, and allows you to see change over time. But because of higher than anticipated web traffic the map was temporarily down for parts of Monday and Tuesday. It appears to be functioning normally now but there may be intermittent periods where it stops functioning. We're working quickly to resolve this issue.
We have been thrilled with the media response to our project. See below some links to the coverage we've received until now:
We are keen to hear your thoughts! If you have any feedback for us on our report, mapping tool, or any other component of this project please get in touch at belonging@berkeley.edu.
