Faculty Spotlight: Saba Mahmood

Professor Saba Mahmood is a member of the Haas Institute Religious Disparities Research Cluster and a Professor of Sociocultural Anthropology at UC Berkeley. Mahmood’s work is known for its interrogation of liberal assumptions about the boundary between ethics and politics, freedom and unfreedom, the religious and the secular, and agency and submission. Mahmood’s new book, Religious Difference in a Secular Age: A Minority Report (Princeton University Press) will be published this fall. Sara Grossman from the Haas Institute interviewed Professor Mahmood about her new work and scholarly focus. Read the interview.

Anniversary of the Americans with Disability Act & and an Interview with Paul Hippolitus

Twenty-five years after the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Paul Hippolitus, Director of the Disabled Students Program at UC Berkeley, talks about his work in the disability field for the past 44 years. Prior to coming to Berkeley, Hippolitus worked in Washington, DC, where he played a key role in efforts to pass and implement the ADA. In this Q&A, he discusses his background in disability justice as well as the social and economic impact of living with disabilities. Read the entire piece.

Culture Spotlight: Transcending Borders through Music

Last spring, the Haas Institute sat down for an interview with Alsarah, the Sudanese songwriter of the Nile Project when she was in residency with CalPerformances at UC Berkeley. The performances were co-sponsored by the Haas Institute. The Nile Project’s musical works address a paradox of plenty and the environmental challenges that sit at the core of potential conflicts in the Nile Basin. Following the Nile Project’s sold-out performances, Elsadig Elsheikh from the Haas Institute sat down with Alsarah, to discuss the importance of music, history and culture in matters of identity and social progress. New Director of the Berkeley Law Reproductive Rights Center

UC Berkeley Law professor Melissa Murray, a member of the Haas Institute's LGBTQ Citizenship faculty cluster, was recently named the new director of the Center on Reproductive Rights and Justice (CRRJ) at Berkeley Law. “We’ve served as a resource, liaison, and partner to reproductive rights and justice organizations in California and throughout the country,” Murray said. “Going forward, we hope to continue what we’ve been doing, but on a more expansive scale.” CRRJ is the nation’s first law school think tank to focus on reproductive rights and justice issues. "The Problem is Profound"

Haas Institute Director john a. powell was interviewed last week by Dorian Warren for the MSNBC show Nerding Out. The focus of the segment was to examine where we are as a nation one year after the death of unarmed teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO. powell explains that the challenges we face as a nation won't be solved quickly, as they are deeply entrenched within society and its structures, but credits the Black Lives Matter movement for keeping these issues at the front of our national consciousness and conversations. New Research on Economic Displacement

Karen Chapple, Professor of City and Regional Planning and Haas Institute Economic Disparities cluster member co-released new research on economic displacement and stages of gentrification in the Bay Area. According to an article in The Daily Californian, these trends predict a continued loss of affordable housing for many Bay Area residents. The research includes interactive maps that show stages of gentrification as well as case studies for different Bay Area cities. Read the full report.
