DETROIT'S WATER CRISIS AND THE FLOOD OF INEQUALITY
Hundreds of Detroit residents flooded the streets a week ago to protest the city shutting off running water to thousands of poor families. PBS documentary focuses on continued school segregation
PBS used the work of Rucker Johnson, professor at the Goldman School of Public Policy, and member of the Haas Institute's Race, Diversity and Educational Policy faculty cluster, to explain the correlation between school integration and improved graduation rates of African American students in the U.S. The PBS documentary, "Separate and Unequal" examines the growing racial divide in America's schools.

A new opinion piece written by Haas Institute Director john powell and Maya Rockeymoore, CEO of the Center for Global Policy Solutions, addresses how a strategy of targeted universalism is needed to ensure that all groups reach their fullest potential.

Black and Brown and Redlined All Over
Despite the speculator-fueled rise in home prices, the tide of "recovery" has not risen all boats. After decades of redlining and predatory lending, many black and brown families' homes are still underwater. As cities try solutions such as eminent domain to refinance underwater mortgages, the banking and lending industries lobby to thwart these efforts.
