Note from Cecilie Surasky

Dear <<First Name>>,

Moments like these remind me why I'm so grateful to be here at the Othering & Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley.

I get to work every day with some of the most brilliant, principled and insightful thinkers in the world. Academics and researchers who go beyond the nightly news and Twitter quick-takes to offer fact-based context, history, and analyses of power.

To see what I'm talking about, if you haven't already, I invite you to join the 12,000 others who watched Friday's #AskOBI livestream "Storming the Capitol: Trumpism's Last Stand?," with professors john a. powell and Ian Haney Lopez.

Listen to the podcast
Professors powell and Haney Lopez, here in conversation with OBI policy analyst Emnet Almedom, are giants of their fields.

Hear them talk about Trumpism, its roots in our country's history, the creation of whiteness, and race- and class-based divide-and-conquer strategies used by the ruling elite to pit us against each other, and how to beat those strategies.

I know we are in the midst of not just a week but centuries of trauma and violence. Learning more about how we got here may help us think about a way forward that honors and truly includes all of us.

With gratitude,

Cecilie Surasky

Podcast: France intensifies crackdown on Muslims

In this episode of Who Belongs?, we speak with two activists based in France — Yasser Louati and Houria Bouteldja — about the intensification of Islamophobia and state repression unfolding in the country following the murder of a schoolteacher in October. Our guests help us understand the current situation as it relates to the country's history of racism, marginalization and terror attacks, what strategies affected communities must embrace to combat Islamophobia, and what this means for Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
