Supreme Court boosts same-sex marriage

Same-sex marriage is now legal in Washington, DC and 30 states following the recent decision of the Supreme Court to decline to review lower court rulings striking down bans. “Avoiding the issue had the effect of legalizing same-sex marriage in several states,” Berkeley Law Professor Russell Robinson and chair of the Haas Institute LGBTQ Citizenship Cluster said. Read the full story.

ANCHOR RICHMOND
The Haas Institute will release a new report next week examining the potential impacts and opportunities of a large new development project to be built in one of the Bay Area region’s most economically distressed cities: Richmond, California. Earlier this year, the Haas Institute released a community report focused on possible housing displacement as a result of a second research campus being built by UC Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The report emphasizes opportunities for business development, affordable housing, employment, and education.

The "Anchor Richmond" report will be available on Oct. 23 on the Haas Institute website.
john powell at Bioneers Conference
Haas Institute Director john powell will speak at the National Bioneers Conference, taking place Oct. 17 to 19 in San Rafael, CA. His talk, titled, "Beloved Community: Interbeing, Race, Class, and Personhood," takes place on Sunday. john will also participate in a Movement Building panel discussion. 
Elsadig Elsheikh to lead webinar on Global Food System Crises
Elsadig Elsheikh, researcher and director of the Haas Institute Global Justice Program, will lead a webinar with the Automoous University of Barcelona on Oct. 20. Elsadig's webinar is titled, "Politics of the Developing World: Global Food System Crises & Opportunities."
The Making of Ferguson
UC Berkeley law Professor Richard Rothstein, research associate with the Economic Policy Institute, recently published "The Making of Ferguson: The Public Policies at the Root of its Troubles." Prof. Rothstein, who co-authored the Haas Institute's amicus brief in in the Mount Holly Fair Housing case before the Supreme Court last fall, highlights public policy as the cause, and potential solution, to the systemic discrimination at the roots of the crisis in Ferguson.

Stop Mass Incarceration Speak Out
African American Studies Professor Ula Taylor moderated a forum on Mass Incarceration at UC Berkeley on Oct. 10. Prof. Taylor is a member of Haas Institute Economic Disparities Cluster. A video of the event, featuring Wanda Johnson, Oscar Grant's mother, and other formerly incarcerated individuals is available online
Remedies to Voter Suppression
On Oct. 8, Berkeley Law Professor Bertrall Ross moderated a panel discussion at UC Berkeley focused voter suppression and potential remedies. Professor Ross is a member of Haas Institute Diversity and Democracy Cluster.

This past weekend saw massive protests in Ferguson and St. Louis, Missouri, in response to the police shooting of Michael Brown by Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson.
